Become One

To become a member, you will need to pick a lodge to begin the process, which is called “petitioning.” For when you join Freemasonry to become a Mason, you also join a lodge. Think of it as joining the local chapter or club of the larger organization known as The Grand Lodge of Ohio.

The names “lodge” and “Grand Lodge” go back hundreds of years when all Masons were taught, “A Lodge is a place where members assemble and work.” That idea still holds true today when we talk about joining “The Lodge.”

By joining this ancient fraternity you’ll be making a commitment to yourself and to your Brother Masons to be the best man you can be. You will be joining millions of Freemasons across the globe committed to helping each other develop, improve and reach their true potential, while simultaneously helping to raise the quality of life for their families and communities.

You will become the latest in a long line of men from all walks of life (i.e., everyday men to world leaders) who have found inspiration in Freemasonry and strive to live by values such as honor, integrity, equality and brotherhood.

Freemasonry is rich with a diverse set of interests supplying those that seek the potential for lifelong learning and lasting relationships.

As does anything worthwhile in life Freemasonry does require commitment and dedication. However, with that noted you will never be asked to place it ahead of family, work or religion. Tasks and/or roles are never forced upon you. As with anything worthwhile, you get from it what you put into it.

Your first step from here is to pick a lodge that is both convenient to petition and attend meetings.

If you reside in Gahanna, OH, or within the Greater Columbus/Franklin County area, Sunrise Lodge No. 783 welcomes you to petition us. This geographical area is not mandatory, just a guideline. We welcome all.

If by chance you are from a further region in the state of Ohio, or anywhere in the U.S., and just happened to find our website feel free to use the following links to possibly find a lodge that better suits your geographical location.

You may also download and print what is called the “Petition” form at any time, for this is the requisite final step should you choose to formally petition (e.g., join) Sunrise Lodge for membership. You’ll find it by simply clicking on this link:  “PETITION” FORM

WHAT TO EXPECT IF YOU DECIDE TO JOIN.

Once you present a petition to join, you’ll be asked to meet with several Brothers from the lodge who interview all prospective members. This will give you the opportunity to ask all questions you may have. We encourage your significant other to also be present.

This interview customarily involves a visit to your home.

The intent is to discern that you are indeed a man of good character and reputation; that you meet all the qualifications for membership; and that your expectations for Freemasonry are realistic.

After the interview they will report back to the lodge and a vote will be taken on your petition. Depending on time, scheduling or other circumstances that may be taking place in our lodge, it may take a month or two from the time you complete the petition to the time you are invited to lodge to start your first degree in Freemasonry.

We prioritize getting new members on their path as quickly as possible.

At your first meeting you will become an Entered Apprentice Freemason, entitled to attend other Entered Apprentice meetings and lodge social and charitable functions.

You will be assigned a mentor who will work with you to answer your questions; help you become proficient in your degree knowledge; and attend lodge with you. Once you become proficient in your Entered Apprentice degree you will progress to Fellow Craft. The process repeats until you are ready to become a Master Mason.

During each stage you will learn more about the mysteries, history, and philosophy of the Fraternity. You will also get to know the other members of the lodge and hopefully begin new friendships that will last a lifetime.

You move through the degrees at your own pace, but your mentor will always be encouraging you to take the next step.

After a man completes his initiate journey and becomes a Master Mason, he is a fully vested Brother in the fraternity for Free and Accepted Masons.

Instructions and information concerning the process:

After downloading and filling out the “Petition” form, you can bring it to the lodge in person to one of our stated meetings. They’re held on the first and third Tuesdays of the month except for July and August. This is the most expedient method for those who already know they want to join.

There is a fee required to initiate the process to be submitted with your Petition of $185.00 by cash or check. This covers all expenses and your first year’s dues. If your Petition is rejected, your entire payment will be returned.

When arriving, just ask the first person you see, tell them who you are and that you are interested in joining, and they’ll introduce you to an officer.

Just remember we generally hold no meetings during the months of July and August. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still inquire by the contact forms provided below, for that, we’re always open and someone will get back to you, regardless.

Although the “Petition” form is straight forward, all you need to concern yourself with is the top portion down to where it first asks for your “Petitioner’s Signature in Full” and “Printed Name in Full.” The “Recommended By” section will be filled out by the recommending Brother and that’s it for now. All the other sections and lines will be filled out as your petition moves along through the process.

With that, on behalf of the Officers and Members of Sunrise Lodge No. 783, thank you for your interest.

Please Note: You may also enter in the supplied “Message box” the mode of contact (e.g., email or telephone) that works best for you, as well as the best day and time.
